Lateral Framing Special Inspection

Lateral Framing Special Inspection (LFSI)

Description: This 8-week course will educate the student in all facets of wood and cold-formed steel lateral framing code requirements, plan interpretation and field inspection. Organization: This course will have lecture, group discussion and bookwork components. There will be weekly topics and quizzes and a final exam. Guest speakers may also be added to the course as schedule allows.

Learning Objectives:

  1. To teach students the duties and responsibilities of a lateral framing special inspector.
  2. Educate students on the International Building Code and AWC requirements for lateral framing.
  3. To familiarize students with reading and interpreting structural drawings.
  4. To prepare students to take (and PASS) the WABO lateral wood and cold-formed steel framing exams and interviews.

Course Topics:

  1. IBC chapter 17 requirements for lateral framing and seismic resistance
  2. IBC code and material requirements for lateral framing in chapters 22 and 23
  3. Shear wall and diaphragm theory
  4. APA standards for material markings and dimensions
  5. AWC design standards, minimum requirements and charts
  6. AISI and SSMA materials and identification
  7. Cold-Formed construction requirements including welding
  8. ASTM standards in lateral wood and cold-formed steel
